karttatietokanta. Karttatietokannan peltoja päätettiin käyttää nykyisiä peltoja kuvaavana aineistona, koska tärkeänä pidettiin peltokuvioiden sijainnin sekä pinta-alatiedon mahdollisimman hyvää tarkkuutta. Aineiston aluerajaus sisältää peltokuviot 5 kilometrin säteellä Uudenmaan maakuntarajasta. Tämä arvioitiin riittäväksi peltojen tuotantokokonaisuuksien muodostumista ajatellen. Sillä lievennettiin analyysialueen rajalla ilmenevää tulosten vääristymää niin, ettei se ulottuisi varsinaiselle Uudenmaan alueelle.Maatalouden kannalta hyvillä ja yhtenäisillä peltoalueilla tarkoitetaan Uudenmaan liiton alueella vähintään 100 hehtaarin peltoalueita, joka on yksi peltokuvio tai jonka muodostavat vähintään 20 hehtaarin peltokuviot, jotka sijaitsevat enintään 300 metrin etäisyydellä toisistaan. Maatalouden kannalta hyvien ja yhtenäisten peltoalueiden selvitystyön taustalla ovat maakuntakaavan laadintaa ohjaavatvaltakunnalliset alueidenkäyttötavoitteet, joiden mukaan hyviä ja yhtenäisiä peltoalueita ei tule ottaa taajamatoimintojenkäyttöön ilman erityisiä perusteita.Uudenmaan erityispiirteenä on pääkaupunkia ympäröivillä alueilla tapahtuvan kasvun myötä kovenevat paineet ottaapeltomaata rakentamiskäyttöön. Siksi nimenomaan Uudellamaalla on tärkeää muodostaa kokonaiskuva peltojen hyvyyteenvaikuttavista seikoista ja selvittää peltojen tuotannollista arvoa. Selvityksessä määritellään, minkälaiset peltoalueetovat hyviä maatalouden kannalta. Määritelmä on varsin yleispiirteinen ja perustuu pääosin peltoalueiden kokoon,yhtenäisyyteen ja keskinäiseen sijaintiin. Selvityksen tulokset toimivat pohjatietona maankäytön suunnittelussa. Niitä eisiis ole tarkoitettu kaavamerkinnöiksi eikä rajoittamaan maanomistajien toimintaa, vaan niitä hyödynnetään maakuntakaavanuudistamisessa taajamatoimintojen sijaintia suunniteltaessa ja kaavan
